Job description
Svitla Systems Inc. is looking for a Senior Ruby Engineer for a full-time position (40 hours per week) in Europe. Our client is a global company specializing in intelligent automation solutions, providing integrated systems for warehouse logistics, material handling, and supply chain optimization.
You'll lead the development of the Ruby-based applications and extensions. You will join a global Agile team to design, build, and maintain features that deliver value to internal and external users, ensure code quality, and collaborate with product owners, domain experts, and DevOps to ship reliable solutions.

Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in software development, including strong knowledge of Ruby.
- Experience building and operating backend services or APIs (REST and/or GraphQL).
- Solid understanding of service-oriented architecture and distributed systems fundamentals.
- Knowledge of relational databases (PostgreSQL or MySQL), schema design, and SQL optimization.
- Experience in automated testing (RSpec, Minitest, factory tools) and test-first mindset.
- Understanding of caching and real-time tech (Redis or equivalent).
- Experience with CI/CD tooling (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, etc.).
- Be comfortable using Git and modern code-review workflows with an understanding of branching/merge strategies.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective written/verbal communication.
- Ability to work collaboratively across time zones with distributed teams.
Will be a plus
- Experience with Ruby frameworks (e.g., Sinatra, Hanami, or similar).
- Understanding of object-oriented programming in a language.
- Excellent mechanical and electrical application design aptitude.
- Experience with material handling equipment.
- Familiarity with 3D parametric programming OR 3D game development like Unity 3D.
- Familiarity with a 3D design application (AutoCAD or NX).
- Knowledge of queries and SQL databases.
- Working knowledge of Agile development methodologies.
- Experience developing front-end software designs.
- Experience working with complex domain-driven systems, configuration engines, or rules-based platforms.
Responsibilities
- Lead implementation of new features, enhancements, and bug fixes across Ruby services and supporting components.
- Work in a global Agile team: participate in sprint planning, standups, refinements, and retrospectives.
- Provide and receive thorough code reviews, mentor peers, and uphold team coding standards.
- Collaborate with product owners and domain experts to clarify requirements, validate solutions, and refine acceptance criteria.
- Partner with DevOps/platform teams on CI/CD pipelines, deployments, and operational runbooks.
- Drive continuous improvement of the codebase: refactoring, test coverage, performance tuning, and technical debt reduction.
- Help triage production incidents, create postmortems, and implement preventative measures.
